Eight More Years?

He pushed through Congress the NAFTA and the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements that represented the greatest surrender in our history of local, state and national sovereignty to an autocratic, secretive system of transnational governance. This system subordinated workers, consumers and the environment to the supremacy of globalized commerce.

That was just for starters. Between 1996 and 2000, he drove legislation through Congress that concentrated more power in the hands of giant agribusiness, large telecommunications companies and the biggest jackpot-opening the doors to gigantic mergers in the financial industry. The latter so-called "financial modernization law" sowed the permissive seeds for taking vast financial risks with other peoples' money (ie. pensioners and investors) that is now shaking the economy to recession.

Ward Churchill, ACTA and Public Opinion

Those who wish to preserve academic freedom, and I do, would do well to incorporate Neal's concept of responsibility and Eismeier's invocation of Shils. Both are necessary elements of the fix if you want ‘buy in' from a skeptical public.

Bubble bursting?

But this episode seems more serious than the dotcom one however, and it probably won't be resolved quite as easily.

Why? Because in 2000, we only managed to soften the landing from the crashing of the stock market bubble by creating a housing bubble. That supported American consumer spending, (enabling Asia to carry on exporting).

Alas this time there are no more obvious bubbles to create.

So today's cut in interest rates will struggle to support consumer spending at the levels necessary to act as a motor to the global economy.

Indeed, fiscal policy will struggle to do that either.

If you want to know the challenge facing the world, it is summarised by the American savings ratio - the proportion of disposable income saved by American households.

Ashlee Simpson insists she doesn't Botox

Ashlee Simpson insists her smooth skin is down to a tweezer "whiz" not Botox.

The 23-year-old singer - whose father Joe recently confirmed she had rhinoplasty to reshape her nose and help her breathing in April 2006 - insists her smooth skin is the work of her great make-up artist.

Her spokesperson said, "Ashlee has never had Botox in her life. She credits her eyebrows to her make-up artist who is a whiz with the tweezer."

Last week, it was reported Ashlee visits plastic surgeon Dr. Raj Kanodia every month to have collagen filler injected into her face.

A source close to the singer said, "She is determined to stay looking as young as possible for as long as possible. The fillers get rid of any wrinkles, and keep her face looking young, taut and smooth."

Last month, Ashlee's dad ignored his daughter's wishes by speaking publicly about her nose job.

King invited Dr. Jan back for a full hour.TMZ tried to get the doctor to say why he operated on Donda West when others had turned her down, but he had no comment. .

Archaeology: Clues From The Mists Of Time Reveal Peru's Chachapoya

The broken skeletons were scattered like random pottery shards, rediscovered where they had fallen centuries ago.

Were these ancient people cut down in some long-forgotten battle? Did European-introduced diseases cause their demise? Were they casualties of some apocalyptic reckoning at this great walled citadel?

The "cloud warriors" of ancient Peru are slowly offering up their secrets - and more questions. Recent digs at this majestic site, once a stronghold of the Chachapoya civilization, have turned up scores of skeletons and thousands of artifacts, shedding new light on these myth-shrouded early Americans and one of the most remarkable, if least understood, of Peru's pre-Columbian cultures.

Among the arresting findings: the practice of incorporating the dead into defensive walls; the use of stone missiles to repel invaders; the discovery of gargoyle-like stone carvings; and the civilization's sudden collapse, possibly in a final, purifying conflagration.

Celeb-a-razzi: Sutherland in the big house

Slow-motion train wreck and "24" star Kiefer Sutherland surrendered to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday to begin serving a 48-day sentence for his previous DUI arrest.

Sentenced earlier Wednesday by Judge Stuart M. Rice, Sutherland later traded the black pin-stripe suit he wore to sentencing for a tasteful orange jumpsuit that should help bring out the pink in his cheeks.

There will be no early release for good behavior, said the L.A. city attorney's office.
