In the last, lumbering days of pregnancy you play a game. It passes the time. It's called What I Wish for My Progeny. Health, happiness, agility, whatever. Your significant other may surprise you. While you say "President of the United States" (because world domination sounds like overreaching), he/she says, "I want her to have a deep sense of empathy." I wished for brains and brawn, but not exactly beauty. I wished for my daughter to be pretty enough. Pretty enough to move seamlessly in the world, pretty enough to have doors open to her. But not so pretty that it crowded out other things, obviating the need to shine brightly in other ways. Even more specifically, I wanted her to be pretty in a distinctive, even idiosyncratic way. I wished for her to look different, to stand out in a pack.
6 Tips for Turning Shoppers Into Buyers
These basic strategies can help you close more sales. 1. Stress your unique selling proposition. Figure out what makes you different from the competition and deliver that message loud and clear. For example, one wedding/event facility touted the credentials of a new head chef they had hired from the best restaurant in town, pushing its conversion rate from 60 to 73 percent. 2. Identify bottlenecks in your sales process. Analyze the steps required to get customers to buy from you and determine your weak spots. Let's say you're in the deck building business. To make a sale, you need to schedule an appointment, show photos of your work, take measurements, propose a design, price the job, provide references and so on. Do you need new photos for your portfolio? Does your proposal package need sprucing up? Are you failing to make follow-up phone calls? Fix the flaws, and sales will follow.
January 2008
Peyton Manning is thrilled that his little brother (Eli, in case you were wondering) is in his first Super Bowl. He's also convinced it won't be his last. “I feel very strongly that this will not be the last Super Bowl he will play in," Peyton said on a conference call a few minutes ago. “I just think he's got what it takes to lead his team to championships." Peyton cited both Eli's work ethic and talent as a reason for his belief that his brother won't be a one and done. In fact, he believes both the Giants and Colts will be in contention for Super Bowls for years. Which begs the question … What about the Manning vs. Manning Super Bowl everyone was talking about halfway through last season? “It certainly could happen," Peyton said.
NYT Surprisingly Addresses Horse Slaughter Without Hyperbole
The headline was slanted, but this January 11 article was a thoughtful assessment of the unintended, but predicted, consequences of the state laws banning US horse slaughter. With the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act that would ban the export of US horses for slaughter before Congress, the Times dove right into this activist Thunderdome. The NYT revealed after the state bans, unwanted horses face “more grueling travel" and are shipped to Canada or worse, “gruesome deaths" in Mexico, where their spinal cords are severed with knives (bold mine). The American slaughterhouses killed horses quickly by driving steel pins into their brains, a method the American Veterinary Medical Association considers humane. Workers in some Mexican plants, by contrast, disable them by stabbing them with knives to sever their spinal cords, said Temple Grandin, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University..
