Fergie Denies Plastic Surgery Claims, Criticizes Magazine

Fergie has slammed an American magazine for suggesting she has undergone cosmetic surgery on her nose and eyebrows. Two pictures of The Black Eyes Peas star - one from the 1980s, and one from 2007 - are printed side-by-side in the current issue of Us Weekly, and a surgeon tells the publication it's likely Fergie has had a rhinoplasty procedure.

But the 32-year-old has denied the claims, and admits such speculation upsets her so much she has seen a therapist.

Fergie says, "One of those (celebrity) magazines says I've had a nose job and an eyebrow lift, which is completely untrue. Personally, I see a therapist. It's hard, it hurts my feelings. I call my hypnotherapist and cry and let it go. That's what I do (to cope). I think that they nitpick these days so much and it's just got to the point where it's ridiculous."

And Fergie isn't the only celebrity angry with this week's issue of Us Weekly - actress Scarlett Johansson is threatening the magazine with legal action over claims she had undergone plastic surgery on her nose.

Ashlee Simpson insists she doesn't Botox

Ashlee Simpson insists her smooth skin is down to a tweezer "whiz" not Botox.

The 23-year-old singer - whose father Joe recently confirmed she had rhinoplasty to reshape her nose and help her breathing in April 2006 - insists her smooth skin is the work of her great make-up artist.

Her spokesperson said, "Ashlee has never had Botox in her life. She credits her eyebrows to her make-up artist who is a whiz with the tweezer."

Last week, it was reported Ashlee visits plastic surgeon Dr. Raj Kanodia every month to have collagen filler injected into her face.

A source close to the singer said, "She is determined to stay looking as young as possible for as long as possible. The fillers get rid of any wrinkles, and keep her face looking young, taut and smooth."

Last month, Ashlee's dad ignored his daughter's wishes by speaking publicly about her nose job.

Caring for Sandy

The manual lift Linda and Jerry once used was harder on the body than carrying her.

They’ve longed for a handicapped bathroom for years, but they don’t have the money to build one. Once, at Tracy’s urging, a company offered to build it for free. A contractor even came out to the mobile home. But they haven’t heard anything about that in a year.

Jerry’s body is beaten by the routine. His arteries have more stents than Linda can count. His bones and muscles and joints are tired.

When he was younger, he could hoist Sandy’s 100 pounds without a wince. Now, his back aches so much that some days he has to sit crooked in his chair to take the pressure off. Other days it hurts no matter how he sits.

But he won’t stop carrying her, even when walking the length of their mobile home feels like walking a mile.

Chairman Bill Brandt works to make up for Illinois Finance Authority's ...

William Brandt Jr. knows how to size up risks and weaknesses in troubled companies as well as political campaigns.

Both skills come into play in Brandt's new post as chairman of the Illinois Finance Authority, one of the nation's largest government financing bodies as the credit markets are roiled and the State of Illinois is making a play for Wrigley Field. (The historic ballpark and its tenant, the Chicago Cubs, are owned by Tribune Co., which publishes this newspaper.)

A Democratic Party operative with close ties to the Clintons, Brandt was appointed to the non-paying post -- his first stint in the public sector -- by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

June 2006

The voice of her little sister Kristen, forever frozen in time, is pleading with her to fight a little bit longer. "I know it's true," said Carol Henderson of Wareham, who lost one daughter to a car accident a decade ago and may now lose another. "Amy has injuries that you and I could not have survived." Amy Johnson, who moved from Wareham to Bridgewater just a few weeks ago, lost control of her car in the early morning and slammed into a tree near Exit 2 on I-495, suffering massive internal injuries. She remains in a coma in the intensive care unit of Brigham and Woman's Hospital. Carol was pregnant with Amy when her 3-year-old daughter Kristin suffered critical injuries in a car accident. Kristin fought to survive for seven more years. "Amy used to tell me how she talks to Kristen every day," Carol said.

Technology cuts risk of surgical sponges

Admitted to a Macon, Ga., hospital in 2004 for surgery for diverticulitis of the colon, Lucille Davis, then 67, left with an undetected and dangerous souvenir: a surgical sponge. Last month the error resulted in a $10 million settlement.

The problem of left-behind sponges is hardly new. A 2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that sponges and other foreign objects were left behind after abdominal surgeries at a rate of 1 for every 1,000 to 1,500 such operations.

Several medical-products companies say sponges are the most common foreign objects left behind in surgeries.

Obama's detestable dirty tricks

What a shame that a contest that has the world gripped, that is transforming international opinion of the United States, that has shown America in its best and most brilliant light, threatens to descend into a pathetic slanging match over race. What a shame for the centre Left, which had everything to cheer about in the stunning choice between, potentially, the first female and the first black president, that they are allowing the contest to slip into an idiotic series of unproven claims about racial bias.

On Monday Hillary Clinton called for a truce reminding everyone that "Senator Obama and I are on the same side". Hear hear. But how did it come to this?

The thin catalogue of complaints against the Clinton campaign from the Obama campaign were unfounded, manipulative and self-indulgent.
