| Appleās lawyers threaten fake Steve Jobs
The Fake Steve Jobs blog is always entertaining. And never more so than now. According to recent posts on the blog, site owner Daniel Lyons has been approached by Apple to accept money in return for closing down the site. After initially announcing the offer on the blog, Lyons was then contacted by Apple's lawyers threatening legal action and telling him the deal was not meant to be public knowledge. The ensuing debate is fascinating as Apple's lawyers get increasingly heavy-handed. (Updated) After Lyons makes public the offer of cash to shut down the blog, Apple's lawyers return with a letter in which they tell Lyons that there are at least three posts on his site that they "deem to be actionable", a lawyer-speak way of threatening legal action. The three posts are listed in a later blog post and involve predictions made on the Fake Steve Jobs blog about upcoming product announcements by the company.
Bubble bursting?
But this episode seems more serious than the dotcom one however, and it probably won't be resolved quite as easily. Why? Because in 2000, we only managed to soften the landing from the crashing of the stock market bubble by creating a housing bubble. That supported American consumer spending, (enabling Asia to carry on exporting). Alas this time there are no more obvious bubbles to create. So today's cut in interest rates will struggle to support consumer spending at the levels necessary to act as a motor to the global economy. Indeed, fiscal policy will struggle to do that either. If you want to know the challenge facing the world, it is summarised by the American savings ratio - the proportion of disposable income saved by American households.
Palatka couple, son are victims of crash
Joseph Bellamy, 31, of Pinellas Park was piloting the Cessna Skyhawk 172 as he took his parents, Gordon Dale Bellamy, 55, and Susan Louise Coyle Bellamy, 53, on a sightseeing flight. All three died when the plane crashed about 3:40 p.m. into Old Tampa Bay, about 100 yards short of Runway 22 at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. Their bodies were recovered from the submerged plane, said Tom Iovino, spokesman for Pinellas County, which owns the airport. Gordon Bellamy was a plumbing contractor in business with his brothers, Donald and Bruce, at Bellamy Plumbing Inc. in Palatka; the business was started by their father. Three wreaths were on a fence Monday at the Bellamy Plumbing office. Susan Bellamy was a registered nurse who worked at Putnam Community Hospital but had changed jobs to work at a Palatka dialysis clinic, said a nephew, Jason Fair.

P.P.S.: Are Knight-Ridder employees actually happy about the prospect of working for Burkle? The poor souls. ... 1:01 A.M. link The Rich Get Glitchier: Automobile Magazine notices a recent capitalist trend that seemingly defies the textbooks. They're reviewing a $73,000 Porsche Cayenne SUV: You might think that kind of money would buy reliable transport. You would be wrong. In fact, our experience lately, particularly among the pedigreed European brands, has been that a higher price tag usuallly equates to a higher incidence of problems compared with less expensive vehicles from lesser nameplates. [Emph. added] The interesting question is why the rich tolerate this--why doesn't at least one European luxury automaker back off the iffy, cutting edge electronics and market a car that, you know, keeps working? ...

Responding to the Jack Lynch Non-Story
I'm going to try not to flip out. Which I may anyway. Because I'm angry, and I'm repulsed by this whole episode, and it's a large part of what's been keeping me away from this "blog" for too long. A Spokane Police Department internal investigation released in its entirety Wednesday says Deputy Mayor Jack Lynch was not stopped in High Bridge Park last August or apprehended at any time for any illegal activity. Remaining unanswered are the circumstances surrounding Lynch's still-unexplained medical leave, which was announced Dec. 29 and is expected to continue until March 1. So what? This has always always been a complete and utter distraction from the "story," intended only to damage Mr. Lynch's credibility by implying he's infirm, and likely has a disease of which he is ashamed, or that implies activity unbecoming to an All Powerful City Employee(!).
The GOP Will Have to Steal the Next Election Because They Cannot Win ...
The Republican party is losing its "business base" because it's on the wrong side of every issue that will decide the Presidency and the make up of congress. Those issues include the economy, the endless war, ballooning deficits and health care. A killer issue is a fact gaining traction even among the GOP: the GOP is bad for a good economy. I've got the stats to prove that beyond any reasonable doubt. Also spelling doom for the GOP is the fact that even hard-nose businessmen are "fed up" with GOP myopia, its fanatical obsession with so-called "social issues", primarily, abortion and gay marriage. These are not the "wedge issues" they used to be. People are just sick of hearing about it! Give it a frickin' rest. Focus On Social Issues. Countless businessmen I know tell me they are exhausted with the Republicans' focus on abortion, gay marriage, and the host of social issues the party insists on putting on the front burner.
Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
But I'm starting to wonder if the big cable boys from back East are taking care of business in North Idaho? We should all demand that they reduce our bills for the service lost today. BTW, I'm still waiting to post the e-mails we received yesterday. I might have to do it from home, if I can. You should check our regular Web site in the interim. It'll appear first there. Now, your Wild Card ... .
