Dr. Jan to Larry: I'm Almost Ruined!

Dr. Jan to Larry: I'm Almost Ruined!Posted Jan 23rd 2008 8:43AM by TMZ Staff

Dr. Jan Adams lasted longer than 90 seconds last night on "Larry King Live" -- though due to breaking Heath Ledger news, his interview was again cut short. The doctor, who performed cosmetic surgery on Donda West before she died, said he needed a second chance to defend himself -- even stating that the West family attorney agreed with his decision.Adams, who referred to himself in the third person, also responded to criticism that he shouldn't be practicing cosmetic surgery without being board certified, and explained his credentials. King invited Dr. Jan back for a full hour.TMZ tried to get the doctor to say why he operated on Donda West when others had turned her down, but he had no comment. .

A Patriot answers two callings

Why, son? Why should I do that?" his father, pastor Ken Watson, responded.

"So you can announce my name," Benjamin answered. "So I can run onto the football field."

And so began a family ritual. Young Benjamin, crammed in with the coats, would patiently wait as his father declared in a booming voice, "Now, starting at running back for the Washington Redskins, No. 45, Benjamin Watson . . . "

At that moment, the boy would bust out, arms raised, eyes fixed straight ahead on the dream in front of him.

"Ever since I can remember," said Ken Watson, "if you asked Benjamin what he wanted to be when he grew up, he'd answer, 'I want to be a football player and a missionary.' "

Twenty-three years later, Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson is an NFL starter, an integral part of an unbeaten team that will try to cap its perfect season with a victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.

Herschel’s new book; UGA’s hoops future

Wow, what a weird day. I meant to post earlier but I ended up spending all afternoon chasing a bizarre story on Herschel Walker.

If you haven't seen it yet, apparently Walker has written an autobiography called "Breaking Free" that will be published by Simon and Schuster and released on August 12 this summer. It's about — and I confirmed this through the publisher — Walker living with multiple-personality disorder.

Very little information is available about the book (which you can preorder for $24.95 at Amazon.com) and, as anybody in this business can tell you, you can get the Pope on the phone easier than you can Herschel Walker. So I've left messages all over the place but we can't reach him to talk about it.

Meanwhile, I talked to Vince Dooley and Frank Ros, two of Herschel's closest friends here in Georgia, and neither of them knew anything about Herschel having MPD or any other psychological disorder and certainly not that he was writing a book about it.

UPDATE 1-Meritage posts fourth-quarter loss versus profit

Commerce Department said sales of new U.S. single-family homes in December plummeted a record 26 percent in 2007 and builders slashed prices by the most since 1970.

Sales in December fell 4.7 percent to an annual rate of 604,000, the slowest pace since 1995, from a downwardly revised rate of 634,000 in November.

"This has been the most difficult year we've experienced in homebuilding in more than 25 years, and we currently expect 2008 will also be challenging," Steven Hilton, Meritage's chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

Meritage reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $128.8 million or $4.91 per share compared with a profit of $9.02 million or 34 cents per share in the year-earlier quarter.

The fourth quarter net loss included $130 million of pretax real estate-related and joint venture valuation adjustments and $58 million of pretax goodwill write-offs.
